What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

In new relationships, do you find yourself spending hours researching your partner's interests, planning elaborate dates based on their passions, or generally making them the center of your hyperfocus?

Help someone understand this

A new partner can become the centre of your attention with astonishing speed. You want to learn everything, share everything and spend every available hour together. The intensity feels genuinely romantic, but can be difficult to sustain once ordinary life returns.

  • messaging throughout the day and talking late into the night
  • researching every interest the other person mentions
  • rearranging most of your week to create more time together

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're so incredibly attentive and romantic!"

What’s actually happening

My brain has locked onto you as a special interest. You are the most fascinating, dopamine-giving thing in my universe right now.

How it gets read

"It feels like we've known each other forever—you just *get* me."

What’s actually happening

I've gone into research mode, learning everything about you. It’s not a strategy; it’s a genuine, all-consuming fascination.

How it gets read

"You have so much energy for us! We can talk for hours."

What’s actually happening

I'm running on pure dopamine, borrowing energy from next week. The crash will come, but right now this connection feels like rocket fuel.

How it gets read

"This is… a lot. Is it always going to be this intense?"

What’s actually happening

This isn't a performance; it's how my brain expresses joy. My world has zoomed in on you, and I’m just trying to navigate the ride.

How it gets read

"You seem distant all of a sudden. Did I do something wrong?"

What’s actually happening

The hyperfocus energy is fading and my system needs to rebalance. It’s not about you—it’s my battery hitting 1%. I still care deeply.
