Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel like a part of yourself is missing after a recent breakup, like you’ve lost a core piece of who you are?

Routines, tastes and plans that once felt shared can become difficult to separate into yours and theirs. Without the role you had beside that person, even familiar parts of life may stop telling you who you are.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Wow, you're already trying a million new things. Glad you're moving on so quickly!"

What’s actually happening

I'm not 'moving on'—I'm trying to find out who I am without them. Every new hobby is a search for a new anchor.

How it gets read

"You're being a little dramatic. It was just a breakup, everyone goes through it."

What’s actually happening

They weren't just a partner; they were a core part of my routine and the person I built my social 'self' for. A huge piece of my identity is just… gone.

How it gets read

"You seem so different from day to day. I can't keep up with who you are now."

What’s actually happening

The mask I wore for them doesn't work anymore, so I'm trying on new ones to see if any of them feel real. It's disorienting for me, too.

How it gets read

"You seem totally fine! You're so busy and active."

What’s actually happening

The busyness is a frantic attempt to outrun the silence. If I stop moving, the emptiness is deafening.

How it gets read

"You're so quiet and withdrawn lately. Are you okay?"

What’s actually happening

My social operating system just crashed. I don't have a script for this situation, so I'm offline until I can figure out the new code for just being myself.
