Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever wake up with a sore jaw or headache, or catch yourself clenching your teeth during the day?

The clench can run in the background through sleep, focused work or a tense afternoon. You notice it later through aching temples, tender teeth or the sudden effort it takes to let your jaw drop.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You look so serious! Just relax a little."

What’s actually happening

My jaw is locked because my brain is processing a million things at once. My body is physically bracing for the cognitive load.

How it gets read

"Are you mad about something? You're being really quiet."

What’s actually happening

I'm clenching so hard to manage my thoughts or hold back a reaction that speaking feels impossible. It's a physical muzzle.

How it gets read

"You seem tense. Have you tried meditating?"

What’s actually happening

This isn't just 'tension'—it's a pressure valve for a nervous system that's in overdrive. My jaw is taking the hit for stress I can't even name yet.

How it gets read

"You look fine, just a little tired."

What’s actually happening

My face might look calm, but my body is stuck in a low-grade fight-or-flight response. The Jaw Vise is the evidence.

How it gets read

"Why do you always have a headache?"

What’s actually happening

It's not 'just a headache.' It's the physical fallout from carrying invisible armor all day. My jaw has been holding the line.
