The Loud Whisper

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever find yourself getting irrationally angry or wanting to flee when you hear someone whispering, even if it's not directed at you?

Help someone understand this

A low whisper can feel more intrusive than ordinary speech. The breathy, close-up sound catches every edge of your attention and can become physically irritating or painful.

  • flinching when someone whispers beside your ear
  • being unable to focus while two people murmur across the room
  • asking someone to speak normally because the whisper feels sharper
  • feeling your jaw tighten at a breathy video voice

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're being so dramatic. It's just a whisper.

What’s actually happening

This is an involuntary physical reaction to a sound that feels like a nail on a chalkboard inside my skull.

How it gets read

Why are you flinching? I'm trying to be quiet for you.

What’s actually happening

The specific frequency of whispering is physically painful, much more so than a normal speaking voice.

How it gets read

Are you trying to listen in on our conversation?

What’s actually happening

No, I'm desperately trying to block out the sound itself, not decipher the words. Please stop.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
