Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever find yourself staying in relationships long after the joy has faded, because leaving feels like breaking a sacred vow?

Problems can become things to endure, explain or keep repairing because commitment still feels binding. The bond continues to carry weight even when the life inside it has become painful or empty.

  • defending a partner to friends while privately knowing the relationship is wearing you down
  • treating years already invested as a reason to keep trying indefinitely
  • marking another anniversary while quietly hoping things will become good again

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You always defend them, so it can't be that bad."

What’s actually happening

My brain has locked onto a promise I made, and breaking it feels like a fundamental failure, no matter how miserable I am.

How it gets read

"Why don't you just leave? You must be scared to be alone."

What’s actually happening

It's not about being alone. It's the crushing guilt I'd feel for 'abandoning' someone or breaking a bond I swore to protect.

How it gets read

"You seem so stubborn—you're just ignoring good advice."

What’s actually happening

My loyalty feels like a core part of my identity. Leaving feels less like a breakup and more like a profound self-betrayal.

How it gets read

"You complain about it, but then you don't do anything."

What’s actually happening

Inside, there’s a civil war between the part of me that’s drowning and the part that signed a lifelong contract in permanent ink. The gridlock is exhausting.
