Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you have a collection of half-empty prescription bottles from medications that didn't quite work or caused unexpected side effects?

Your history may contain a long line of medications aimed at explanations that never quite fit. Bottles, side effects and cautious new trials accumulate, while the difficulty you were trying to reach remains largely unchanged.

  • opening a drawer that still holds half-finished prescriptions from several treatment attempts
  • reporting an unexpected reaction and moving straight to another medication
  • trying yet another dose change while the original daily problems stay the same

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Are you sure you're giving it enough time? These things take weeks to work."

What’s actually happening

I've given it years. Years of waiting for the 'right' thing to kick in while feeling more and more like a failed experiment.

How it gets read

"You seem resistant to getting help. Nothing ever works for you."

What’s actually happening

I want help more than anything. But trying solutions for the wrong problem feels like using a key for the wrong lock, and it's starting to break both.

How it gets read

"My friend took that and it was a miracle! Maybe you're just really sensitive to side effects."

What’s actually happening

The side effects are a sign that my body is screaming 'wrong diagnosis!' Hearing about someone else's miracle just makes me feel more broken.

How it gets read

"You just need to find the right combination. Don't give up."

What’s actually happening

I'm not giving up, but I'm exhausted from exploring the wrong map. My brain isn't 'treatment-resistant'; it's been misdiagnosed.
