Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself thriving in a deep one-on-one chat, only to feel completely lost and silent the moment it becomes a group conversation?

Help someone understand this

Conversation can feel easy and natural with one other person, then become hard to enter as soon as a few more arrive. With four voices in the room, timing, attention and your place in the exchange can all get slippery.

  • talking freely over coffee with one friend and going quiet when two others join
  • doing well in a one-to-one meeting but losing the thread in a small team discussion
  • waiting for a gap to speak until the group has moved to another subject
  • connecting closely with people individually but barely speaking when they gather together

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Looks like: You're suddenly bored or annoyed by the conversation.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: My brain's CPU just hit 100%. I'm trying to track multiple conversations and non-verbal cues at once, and the system is lagging.

How it gets read

Looks like: You don't like the person who just joined.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: The conversational traffic pattern just changed, and I've lost the rhythm. I can't find a gap to jump in without causing a crash.

How it gets read

Looks like: You've checked out and stopped listening.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: I'm mentally drowning in social data. I've switched to 'observation mode' just to stay afloat.
