The Pre-Party Anxiety Spiral

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself feeling more exhausted *thinking* about a social event than actually attending it?

As the event gets closer, possibility turns into a string of things that could go wrong. You picture awkward arrivals, empty conversations and being unable to leave, and the hours before the party become an event of their own.

  • checking the time all afternoon while your anxiety rises with every hour
  • imagining walking into the room and finding nobody you know
  • feeling ready to cancel after spending so long worrying that you are already exhausted

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Are you excited for the party tonight?"

What’s actually happening

My brain is currently running seventeen different disaster simulations, from saying the wrong thing to forgetting how human conversations work.

How it gets read

"You're so quiet. Everything okay?"

What’s actually happening

I'm mentally rehearsing three 'safe' opening lines and planning my escape route to a quiet corner for when I inevitably need to reboot.

How it gets read

"Just throw something on! It's not that serious."

What’s actually happening

I'm not just choosing an outfit; I'm building my social armor. I need the perfect combination of 'approachable' and 'please don't perceive me too intensely.'

How it gets read

"Why are you bailing? You seemed fine an hour ago."

What’s actually happening

The anticipatory anxiety has officially used up 100% of my social battery before I've even left the house. My system is demanding an emergency shutdown.

How it gets read

"You're just overthinking. It'll be fun once you get there!"

What’s actually happening

My brain isn't just 'thinking,' it's running a high-stakes threat-assessment protocol. It genuinely believes it's keeping me safe from potential social doom.
