The Pre-Rejection Shield

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself ending relationships, jobs, or projects prematurely, even when things are going okay, just to avoid the possibility of being rejected later?

Help someone understand this

Leaving first can feel safer than waiting to learn whether someone else will reject you. You end the relationship, withdraw the application or quit the situation while there is still a chance the choice can belong to you.

  • ending a promising relationship after one distant message
  • withdrawing from a job process before the final decision arrives
  • stopping contact with a new friend when you begin to worry they are losing interest

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You just quit out of nowhere! You're so impulsive."

What’s actually happening

This wasn't impulsive. It was a pre-emptive strike against a hurt that felt inevitable and absolutely unbearable.

How it gets read

"I guess you just didn't care that much anyway."

What’s actually happening

I cared so much that the thought of you leaving first felt catastrophic. This was the only way I knew how to control the ending.

How it gets read

"Why are you making such a big deal out of one little thing?"

What’s actually happening

That 'one little thing' felt like the final piece of evidence that rejection was coming. It was the signal to activate the escape plan.

How it gets read

"You seemed so sure of yourself when you walked away."

What’s actually happening

That wasn't confidence, it was terror. I was running from the pain of being 'not enough' before anyone else could tell me.

How it gets read

"You always run away when things get real."

What’s actually happening

When it feels 'real,' it also feels incredibly risky. My system is wired to see connection as a potential threat, so it hits the eject button to stay safe.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
