A painful social moment makes distance feel safer. You pull away from people, but the isolation leaves you wanting connection and watching more closely for signs of rejection. The next uncertain interaction can then land even harder.
- stopping messages after one friend gives a brief reply
- declining invitations after feeling overlooked at a gathering
- withdrawing from a group chat and then feeling hurt that nobody follows up
- avoiding someone after an awkward exchange while repeatedly checking whether they have contacted you
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"You bailed on plans again. Guess you're not interested."
The risk of feeling that sharp sting of rejection again feels too high. I'm withdrawing to protect myself, not because I don't want to see you.
"Why are you suddenly so cold and distant? Are you mad?"
I'm not being cold, I'm emotionally flooded. A tiny moment of perceived rejection sent a tidal wave of old pain through my system, and I'm just trying to stay afloat.
"You're taking this way too personally. It wasn't a big deal."
For my nervous system, it *was* a big deal. It hit a tripwire connected to a deep fear of being unwanted, and the emotional fallout is huge and real.
"Okay, fine. I'll just leave you alone, then."
I'm retreating into a protective shell because it feels safer than risking more hurt, but inside that shell, I feel incredibly isolated and lonely.
