Big Feelings

The Rejection Spike

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do small social setbacks or criticisms sometimes hit you with an unexpectedly intense wave of emotional pain?

Help someone understand this

The drop can be immediate and much bigger than the moment seems to call for. A brief comment, changed tone or unanswered message can suddenly fill the whole emotional picture.

  • reading a short correction and feeling your stomach drop
  • seeing a message marked as read with no reply
  • hearing someone sound slightly less warm than usual
  • being left out of a small decision and feeling suddenly crushed

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're being way too sensitive. It was just a joke."

What’s actually happening

That 'joke' landed like a physical blow. This isn't about sensitivity; it's a full-system emotional plunge that feels like falling.

How it gets read

"Are you mad at me? You suddenly got really quiet."

What’s actually happening

Not mad, just... gone. My brain is now a full-time detective agency reviewing that last interaction for clues of where I messed up.

How it gets read

"Why are you still thinking about that? It happened hours ago."

What’s actually happening

My nervous system doesn't have an off-switch for perceived threats. For me, the feeling is still happening right now, on a loop.

How it gets read

"Okay, you can stop apologizing. It's not a big deal."

What’s actually happening

This isn't just an apology. It's a frantic attempt to patch a social connection that feels like it's about to break completely.

How it gets read

"You seemed totally fine when they said that."

What’s actually happening

That was my masking on autopilot. The emotional zap didn't hit until a few seconds later, and now my entire internal circuit board is fried.
