The Rejection Sensitive Partner

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Does a slight change in your partner's tone or a cancelled plan send your anxiety spiraling?

Help someone understand this

A small change in your partner's tone, attention or availability can land as a sign that something is wrong between you. The uncertainty quickly becomes personal. Reassurance may be needed even when the moment began with an ordinary need for space.

  • hearing tiredness in a reply and assuming your partner is upset with you
  • feeling rejected when they want an evening alone
  • reading a shorter-than-usual message as a loss of affection

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're reading way too much into it. I'm just tired."

What’s actually happening

That tiny shift in your tone felt like an emotional tidal wave, and my nervous system is bracing for impact.

How it gets read

"Why are you so upset? I just said I needed a little space."

What’s actually happening

My brain translated "I need space" into a five-alarm fire that screams, "They're leaving, and it's your fault."

How it gets read

"I already told you we're fine. Why do you keep asking?"

What’s actually happening

The feeling of being rejected is so physically and emotionally real that I need constant reassurance to convince my body it's not in danger.

How it gets read

"You're picking a fight over nothing."

What’s actually happening

This isn't a fight; it's a desperate attempt to defend against a feeling of abandonment that's completely flooding my system.

How it gets read

"It's just a text message, they're probably busy."

What’s actually happening

The silence isn't just silence. My brain is playing a high-def movie of every possible thing I did wrong to deserve being ignored.
