The Repair Lag

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

After a disagreement, do you need a significant amount of time alone to process before you're ready to talk it out?

Help someone understand this

After conflict, you need time before reconnection feels possible. Thoughts, emotions and words are still arriving, even if the other person is ready to repair immediately. The delay is part of processing the rupture rather than a clear decision to stay distant.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

“You’re giving me the silent treatment to punish me.”

What’s actually happening

My brain is buffering. The words are gone, and my system needs to reboot before I can even think about talking.

How it gets read

“If you cared, you’d want to fix this right now.”

What’s actually happening

I care so much that I *can’t* fix it right now. A rushed repair feels dangerous, and I need time to find the real words.

How it gets read

“You’re just avoiding the conversation.”

What’s actually happening

I’m not avoiding the talk; I’m avoiding a meltdown. My nervous system is screaming ‘DANGER,’ and I need space to feel safe again.

How it gets read

“You’re being so cold and distant.”

What’s actually happening

I’m not distant; I’m flooded. My emotional dashboard is flashing every warning light, and I have to pull over to keep from short-circuiting.

How it gets read

“Just tell me what’s wrong.”

What’s actually happening

I literally can’t. My language center has gone offline. It’s not a choice; my brain has pulled the plug to conserve power.
