The Scent Assault

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do certain smells make you feel instantly nauseous or headachy?

Help someone understand this

A smell can hit with such force that it becomes hard to stay in the space. Perfume, hot food or cleaning products may fill the whole moment, with nausea or a headache arriving close behind.

  • stepping into a lift after someone wearing strong perfume
  • getting a headache in a room that has just been cleaned
  • moving away from a table when several food smells mix together
  • opening a scented product and needing to close it again straight away

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"It's just a scented candle, it smells nice!"

What’s actually happening

That 'nice' smell feels like a sharp, stabbing noise inside my skull. I'm trying not to physically flinch.

How it gets read

"Why are you making that face? You seem annoyed."

What’s actually happening

I'm not annoyed, I'm holding back a wave of nausea and a migraine that just crashed the party in my head.

How it gets read

"You're being a little dramatic, aren't you?"

What’s actually happening

My entire nervous system just went into red alert. I'm fighting a genuine fight-or-flight response over a smell.

How it gets read

"You suddenly got so quiet and distant."

What’s actually happening

All my processing power has been rerouted to 'Survive The Smell.' There's literally no energy left for conversation.

How it gets read

"Just ignore it, it's not that strong."

What’s actually happening

Telling me to 'ignore it' is like telling someone to ignore a fire alarm blaring right next to their ear. It's impossible.
