Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you often feel confused when someone reacts negatively to a comment you believed was purely factual and helpful?

Help someone understand this

Flattery, ritual politeness and subtle status signals may not feel valuable or even register as part of the exchange. You focus on what is being said or done, while the extra social layer passes by unnoticed.

  • answering the question directly without returning the expected compliment
  • missing that a particular seating choice signals status to the group
  • not joining in when colleagues praise a manager's ordinary decision
  • forgetting the small polite exchange before getting to the purpose of a call

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're so arrogant, acting like you know everything."

What’s actually happening

"I was just sharing information I thought was relevant and useful."

How it gets read

"Why are you being so rude? You don't care about my feelings."

What’s actually happening

How it gets read

"They're just not a 'people person'."

What’s actually happening

"I love people, but the unwritten rules of interaction are exhausting and confusing."

How it gets read
