The Temperature Takeover

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself unable to concentrate on anything else until the room temperature is *exactly* right?

Help someone understand this

Once your body registers too hot or too cold, the temperature crowds out everything else. Conversation, patience and concentration can all narrow around the need to get comfortable again.

  • feeling close to tears when a room becomes slightly too warm
  • being unable to think while cold air blows onto one arm
  • changing clothes several times as the temperature moves
  • losing patience quickly when the car heater or air conditioning misses the mark

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

They're just being picky about the thermostat again.

What’s actually happening

My entire nervous system is on high alert and I can't think about anything else.

How it gets read

Why are they being so dramatic about a little heat?

What’s actually happening

This feels physically painful, like my skin is burning or my bones are aching from cold.

How it gets read

They always have to find something to complain about.

What’s actually happening

I am desperately trying to solve a real problem that is hijacking my ability to function.

How it gets read

They're just using the temperature as an excuse to get out of this.

What’s actually happening

My brain is shutting down. I can't process language or engage socially until this is fixed.
