What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself unable to eat certain foods purely because of how they feel in your mouth, regardless of how they taste?

Help someone understand this

Some food textures can stop a meal before taste has any say in it. Mushy, slimy or unexpectedly soft food may bring an immediate full-body refusal that is hard to push past.

  • gagging when cooked vegetables turn softer than expected
  • removing tomato from a sandwich because the wet texture touches the bread
  • liking the flavour of yoghurt but being unable to manage its texture
  • abandoning a meal after one unexpectedly gristly bite

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're just being a picky eater.

What’s actually happening

My brain is screaming 'POISON!' and my gag reflex is on high alert.

How it gets read

Just try one bite, you might like it!

What’s actually happening

Forcing myself to eat this feels like a genuine violation of my body's safety.

How it gets read

It's just food, what's the big deal?

What’s actually happening

This texture is so overwhelming it's causing a full-system sensory shutdown.

How it gets read

You're being ungrateful for the meal.

What’s actually happening

I feel so much guilt and wish my body would let me eat it, but it physically won't cooperate.
