The 'Too Much' Feedback Loop

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever hold back from sharing things you're excited about because you're worried people will think you're 'too much'?

Help someone understand this

You share something with genuine excitement, then notice the room go flatter or someone pull back. The energy drops out of you, and silence becomes the safest place to spend the rest of the interaction.

  • talking quickly about an interest, seeing blank faces and barely speaking afterwards
  • sending several enthusiastic messages, then retreating when the replies become shorter
  • starting a vivid story and cutting it off with 'never mind' after someone looks away

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Wow, you have... a lot of feelings about that.

What’s actually happening

I was sharing from a place of joy and connection, and now I just feel exposed and judged for my intensity.

How it gets read

You suddenly went quiet. Did I say something wrong?

What’s actually happening

The 'too much' alarm went off. I've retreated into my shell to avoid any more social damage.

How it gets read

Okay, I get it, you're really into that.

What’s actually happening

That felt like a dismissal, not an acknowledgment. My attempt to connect through my passion just hit a wall.

How it gets read

You seem fine, just a little quiet now.

What’s actually happening

On the inside, I'm replaying the entire conversation, feeling the shame spiral kick in, and trying to figure out where I went 'wrong'.

How it gets read

Anyway, moving on...

What’s actually happening

The message was received loud and clear: my topic isn't welcome. The only safe option now is to be silent.
