What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

When you're overwhelmed or unfocused, do you ever feel a strong, almost instinctual urge to spin, swing, or rock?

Help someone understand this

Spinning, swinging or rocking can feel deeply satisfying. Repeated movement brings a clear, enjoyable sense of your body in motion, and you may want to keep it going long after others would stop.

  • turning slowly in an office chair between tasks
  • staying on a playground swing until everyone else is ready to leave
  • spinning in the kitchen when a favourite song comes on
  • rocking back and forth while listening to something absorbing

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just being silly or immature.

What’s actually happening

My nervous system is desperately seeking regulation.

How it gets read

Losing control and getting hyper.

What’s actually happening

Taking control in the only way that works right now.

How it gets read

Trying to get attention.

What’s actually happening

Trying to block out the world so I can find my center.

How it gets read

Can't you just be still for a minute?

What’s actually happening

Stillness is what I'm creating with this motion.
