Getting Things Done

Just Can't Start

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever felt a physical inability to start a simple task, even one you know is important or genuinely want to do?

Help someone understand this

Knowing the first step does not make it available. The task sits in front of you while your body answers with heaviness, recoil, or a firm internal stop.

  • sitting in front of an open form without being able to type the first answer
  • feeling your body pull away when someone reminds you to start a chore
  • wanting to make an important call and being unable to press the number
  • remaining on the sofa while the simple next step feels physically blocked

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're just being difficult."

What’s actually happening

"My brain and body are physically frozen. I literally cannot move."

How it gets read

"But you did it yesterday without any problems."

What’s actually happening

"My capacity, energy, and internal resources are completely different today."

How it gets read

"It's such a tiny, easy thing to do."

What’s actually happening

"The size of the task doesn't matter. It's the feeling of the demand itself that's setting off all the alarms."

How it gets read

"Just stop procrastinating and get it over with."

What’s actually happening

"This isn't a choice. I feel trapped and my nervous system is in a state of fight, flight, or freeze."
