Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself mentally walking through the step-by-step instructions for routine tasks like making coffee or taking a shower?

Help someone understand this

Routine does not always mean automatic. Making coffee, getting dressed or leaving the house may still require an internal set of instructions, with each familiar step consciously located and completed before the next one appears.

  • talking yourself through each stage of getting dressed on a work morning
  • checking what comes next every time you cook a familiar meal
  • rebuilding the leaving-home sequence from scratch while the clock keeps moving
  • ending the day exhausted after completing tasks that never seemed to run automatically

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You handled that meeting so well, you seemed totally fine.

What’s actually happening

Thanks. I now have exactly zero percent energy left for the rest of the day.

How it gets read

Why is this taking you so long? It's not that complicated.

What’s actually happening

My brain is currently running a 15-step mental checklist for this 'simple' task, please stand by.

How it gets read

Just stop overthinking it and relax!

What’s actually happening

Relaxing is what turns on autopilot. My brain doesn't have that switch; this is me 'piloting' the plane.

How it gets read

You seem so organized and on top of everything.

What’s actually happening

It's a desperate survival strategy. If I don't consciously control every single piece, the whole system collapses.
