Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do your emotions sometimes feel like a playlist on shuffle — happy one second, down the next, with no rhyme or reason?

Help someone understand this

The change can be quick enough that you barely have time to settle into one feeling before another takes over. The intensity is real each time, even when the shift makes little sense in the moment.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You were just so happy five minutes ago! What happened?"

What’s actually happening

The joy was 100% real, but the emotional gas tank just hit empty without warning. This isn't a choice; it's the crash.

How it gets read

"Did I say something wrong? Are you mad at me?"

What’s actually happening

It's almost never about you. My brain's internal DJ just slammed the needle from a happy pop song to a funeral dirge without my permission.

How it gets read

"You're being so dramatic. It can't be that bad."

What’s actually happening

This isn't a performance; it's a genuine emotional tide that just swept in. I'm just trying not to drown.

How it gets read

"You're so unpredictable. I just can't keep up."

What’s actually happening

Tell me about it. It feels less like I'm driving the car and more like I'm tied to the hood. I’m just as surprised as you are.

How it gets read

"Just try to think about something positive!"

What’s actually happening

That feels like trying to fix a flat tire by turning up the radio. The core issue is still there, and positive thoughts can't patch this hole.
