Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you often make jokes about your own forgetfulness, awkwardness, or intensity before anyone else can comment on it?

Help someone understand this

The joke lands before anyone else can turn the moment into a judgment. Making the comment yourself lets you control the tone, even when the thing underneath it still feels tender.

  • calling yourself a disaster while searching for your keys in front of friends
  • making a joke about your brain before admitting you missed a deadline
  • introducing a messy desk as 'the natural habitat of chaos' when someone walks in
  • laughing at yourself for asking someone to repeat their name

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just a naturally funny and humble person.

What’s actually happening

This is a carefully deployed defense mechanism to control the narrative.

They don't take themselves too seriously.

I take my struggles very seriously; this is how I make them less scary for others.

How it gets read

So confident and at ease with their flaws.

What’s actually happening

I'm terrified you'll judge me for this, so I'm pointing it out first.

How it gets read

Just being quirky and relatable.

What’s actually happening

I'm proactively lowering your expectations so I don't disappoint you.
