The Bed Rot

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

After a busy day or social event, do you feel an urgent, physical need to lie in bed in a dark, quiet room for hours just to feel human again?

Help someone understand this

Once the social part is over, even small next steps can vanish from reach. Bed becomes the only workable place, and a short event can cast a recovery shadow across the rest of the day.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just being lazy and wasting the day.

What’s actually happening

My system is performing a critical reboot after a total crash. This is essential maintenance, not leisure.

How it gets read

Avoiding responsibilities and being unproductive.

What’s actually happening

My capacity is at zero. I literally don't have the spoons to function, let alone be productive. Survival is the only task.

How it gets read

Being moody and choosing to be withdrawn.

What’s actually happening

I'm in a self-imposed sensory deprivation state to recover from overwhelming social or environmental input. It's a survival strategy.
