The Meeting Hangover

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel disproportionately exhausted after meetings, even short ones?

Help someone understand this

A single meeting can keep taking energy after it ends. Following several voices, reading the room and deciding when and how to speak leave your thoughts slow and your social capacity spent for the rest of the day.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You were pretty quiet in that meeting!"

What’s actually happening

My brain was running a thousand background processes: tracking the conversation, decoding subtext, managing my facial expressions, and trying not to say something weird. It’s fried.

How it gets read

"You seemed totally fine, really on top of it."

What’s actually happening

That 'on top of it' look was a high-energy performance. My social battery is now blinking red and I might need to reboot in a dark room.

How it gets read

"Why are you so tired now? The meeting wasn't that intense."

What’s actually happening

The adrenaline from the social performance just wore off. This is the crash. It's less about the topic and more about the massive cognitive load of just *being* in the meeting.

How it gets read

"You're suddenly so checked out. Is something wrong?"

What’s actually happening

Nothing's wrong, my system just went into low-power mode to recover. All non-essential functions—like speaking—have been temporarily suspended for system maintenance.

How it gets read

"Want to grab a coffee and debrief?"

What’s actually happening

My brain has just exited a social triathlon and cannot form another coherent sentence. The only 'debrief' I can handle involves silence and staring at a wall.
