The Caretaker Imbalance

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel more comfortable giving support than receiving it?

Help someone understand this

You may be the person who notices what everyone needs, steps in first and keeps things running. When care turns towards you, accepting it can feel exposing, awkward or much harder than carrying on alone.

  • remembering everyone's appointments while hiding that you're overwhelmed
  • taking over when a partner is tired but refusing the same care when you are
  • saying 'I've got it' until you are carrying nearly every practical task
  • feeling guilty or exposed when someone tries to look after you

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're the strong one! You can handle anything."

What’s actually happening

My 'strength' is actually a desperate attempt to keep everything from falling apart, and my battery is at 1%.

How it gets read

"You never let anyone help you. You're just too independent."

What’s actually happening

Receiving care feels vulnerable and unsafe. Taking charge is my armor—it's how I know I'm okay.

How it gets read

"It's so generous of you to take care of everything!"

What’s actually happening

It's less about generosity and more about a deep, compulsive need to manage everyone's well-being so I can finally feel calm.

How it gets read

"You never ask for anything. You must not need much."

What’s actually happening

I've spent so long silencing my own needs that I've either forgotten what they are or I'm terrified to voice them.
