Physical desire and the wish for emotional closeness don't always arrive together. Your body may be interested when you don't feel socially connected, or you may crave tenderness while sexual desire is nowhere nearby.
- wanting to cuddle and feel close but having no interest in sex
- feeling physical desire during a period when emotional conversation feels difficult
- being surprised that a deeply connected evening doesn't bring sexual interest with it
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"You seem so distant. Don't you want to be close?"
I want to be emotionally close—let's talk for hours!—but my nervous system is screaming 'no touch' right now.
"You're sending such mixed signals."
I'm not sending mixed signals; I'm sending two separate signals. One is for emotional connection, the other for physical closeness. They don't always broadcast at the same time.
"You were just saying how much you missed me, and now you're pulling away."
My heart is all in! But my sensory system just hit a wall and needs space to reboot. The emotional desire is there, the physical capacity isn't.
"So you want to cuddle but... that's it?"
Physical comfort and sexual desire are on two totally different operating systems for me. One is about safety and soothing, the other is about a different kind of intimacy.
"So you don't find me attractive anymore?"
This has nothing to do with attraction. My desire for you and my capacity for physical intimacy are just not synced up today. One doesn't cancel out the other.
