Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel like you have to be a different version of yourself to get through the workday — only for a completely different you to emerge once you get home?

Help someone understand this

Your volume, energy and expressiveness can change completely between settings. At work you barely speak; back in a familiar space, the stories, jokes and noise all come rushing out.

  • being known as reserved by colleagues and famously loud by your family
  • saying almost nothing at a gathering, then talking nonstop in the car home
  • keeping every reaction small at school and bursting into chatter at home
  • watching work friends look surprised when they meet you in your own space

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

What’s actually happening

What’s actually happening

Is conserving every drop of social energy for safe people and spaces.
