What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself tensing up or feeling an urge to flee the moment you sit down in a salon chair?

Help someone understand this

A haircut can mean an hour of sensations that are difficult to escape. Water runs near your face, scissors move beside your ears and tiny loose hairs keep touching your neck and clothes.

  • tensing as the spray bottle wets the hair around your face
  • flinching each time scissors work close to an ear
  • feeling trapped by loose hairs inside the collar
  • wanting to shower immediately after leaving the salon

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Looks calm and still in the chair.

What’s actually happening

My entire body is clenched, bracing for the next unpredictable touch, sound, or snip.

How it gets read

Making polite small talk with the stylist.

What’s actually happening

Trying to follow a conversation while my scalp is crawling feels like doing calculus in a hurricane.

How it gets read

Getting their hair washed.

What’s actually happening

The water is a shock, the pressure is wrong, and I can't move away as it drips down my neck.

How it gets read

Nodding along with the stylist's suggestions.

What’s actually happening

I literally can't process your words right now, I'm just trying not to crawl out of my skin.
