The Phone Call Dread

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you often write out a script or bullet points before making a simple phone call, like ordering food or scheduling an appointment?

Help someone understand this

A brief phone call can occupy far more time before it happens than it takes to complete. You rehearse the opening, predict the possible replies and wait for the moment when pressing call feels possible.

  • writing out a script to book a routine appointment
  • checking a shop's opening hours repeatedly before phoning
  • practising your first sentence aloud and still hanging up before it rings
  • spending an afternoon preparing for a call that lasts under a minute

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just ignoring the reminder to call.

What’s actually happening

Mentally rehearsing every possible conversational path and outcome.

How it gets read

Being lazy and procrastinating.

What’s actually happening

Feeling completely stuck in task paralysis, unable to initiate.

How it gets read

Making a mountain out of a molehill.

What’s actually happening

Drowning in overwhelm from the social and cognitive demands of a live interaction.

How it gets read

They seem perfectly fine texting all day.

What’s actually happening

Texting allows me precious time to process and craft a response; calls are unpredictable and immediate.
