Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

After a breakup, do you find even simple tasks overwhelming, like your brain and body are just…offline?

Help someone understand this

Time can narrow into long stretches of sleep, stillness or staring at tasks that will not become doable. Words are scarce, decisions barely arrive, and the ordinary shape of the day can fall away.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're just being lazy and moping around in bed.

What’s actually happening

This isn't laziness; it's a full system crash. My brain has pulled the emergency brake to process overwhelming grief, and basic functions are temporarily offline.

How it gets read

Just get over it already. Everyone goes through breakups.

What’s actually happening

My nervous system is treating this like a severe injury. 'Getting over it' isn't a choice right now; healing is a slow, involuntary process that can't be rushed.

How it gets read

Why are you ignoring everyone? Are you mad at me?

What’s actually happening

I'm not mad; I'm functionally non-verbal. The part of my brain that handles communication has gone dark to conserve energy for survival.

How it gets read

You seem so cold and distant all of a sudden.

What’s actually happening

It's not coldness, it's numbness. My emotional circuits are overloaded, so they've gone into a low-power mode to keep from frying completely.

How it gets read

Don't you want to feel better?

What’s actually happening

Every cell in my body wants to feel better. Right now, 'better' means hibernating and allowing this shutdown to do its protective work. Pushing through would only make it worse.
