Visible achievement can be used to erase the effort and difficulty underneath it. Good grades, articulate answers or a successful career become evidence that support cannot be necessary, even when the rest of life is barely holding together.
- being told you can't have a real difficulty because you did well at school
- describing daily chaos while a professional keeps returning to your qualifications
- having a request for support answered with 'but you're so capable'
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"But you're so articulate and you did so well in school!"
You're seeing a lifetime of masking and compensation. That 'success' was fueled by anxiety and came at a huge cost to my well-being.
"You don't *look* like you have ADHD/autism."
You see a swan gliding on the water. You don't see the frantic, chaotic paddling happening just beneath the surface to make it all look effortless.
"Everyone gets overwhelmed. You just need to manage your stress better."
This isn't just 'stress.' It's a fundamental difference in wiring. My brain is navigating a world not built for it, and that constant friction creates burnout, not just a bad day.
"You seem so capable and put-together."
That capability you see is draining my battery to zero every single day. There is no reserve power left, and I’m terrified of what happens when it finally runs out.
"Are you sure you aren't just making excuses?"
I spent years blaming myself and thinking I was broken or lazy. Asking for help is the last resort, not the first excuse.
