After being corrected often enough, trying can begin to feel pointless. You step back, wait or do less because any approach you choose seems likely to be judged wrong. Eventually someone else takes over the task you no longer feel able to own.
- stopping cooking after repeated criticism of how you prepare meals
- waiting for someone else to pack because your choices are always rearranged
- avoiding a shared household job after being told several times that you do it incorrectly
- asking for every step rather than risking another correction
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"You're just being lazy. Why don't you ever help?"
It's not laziness; it's a defense mechanism. My brain has decided that not trying is safer than trying and being criticized again.
"Fine, I'll just do it myself. It's easier that way."
This is exactly what my system learned to expect. The pattern works by letting you take over, which prevents me from failing in your eyes.
"Are you doing this on purpose just to annoy me?"
It's not a conscious strategy. It’s a deeply learned response to avoid the shame and exhaustion of constant correction.
"You act so helpless sometimes."
I'm not helpless, I'm worn down. My energy for attempting this task and bracing for the inevitable feedback is completely gone.
