Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever found yourself suddenly crying, not from sadness, but because a piece of music or a view was just... perfect?

Beauty can land with enough force to bring immediate tears. A piece of music, a painting or a particular evening sky opens something up, and the feeling moves through you before words do.

  • crying when a favourite song swells at exactly the right moment
  • standing in front of a painting with tears arriving unexpectedly
  • being moved by sunlight across an ordinary landscape
  • rewatching one scene because its beauty gets you every time

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"They're being so dramatic and sentimental."

What’s actually happening

"I'm having a moment of pure, unfiltered connection with human creativity and it's overwhelming."

How it gets read

"Are they secretly sad about something else?"

What’s actually happening

"Nope, just completely floored by the sheer perfection of this chord progression."

How it gets read

"They must be trying to get attention."

What’s actually happening

"I'm trying desperately not to have a full-on sob in this art gallery."

How it gets read

"It's just a painting."

What’s actually happening

"This 'painting' just communicated a feeling I've had my whole life but never had words for."
